The Performance Fabric

Each of our masks and neck gaiters have world-leading antimicrobial technology- Microban AEGIS Microbe Shield. They are made of a material that is an athletic fiber, designed to be worn against the skin. This fiber is also designed to wick away moisture from the skin. Mask comfort is largely determined by what’s happening “next-to-skin”.

In warm weather, if moisture is allowed to remain, you feel a bothersome clamminess. In cooler temperatures this same moisture becomes chilling – robbing you of precious body heat.

With 5,088 stitches per inch, the jersey knit fabric provides effective filtration for most allergens, dust, a variety of bacteria, mold spores, and dander, and help protect against airborne effluents (water droplets of 75 to 100 microns) resulting from sneezes and coughs.

The Aegis Microbe Shield®

The AEGIS shield is a unique chemical technology that can be applied to a material, making it antimicrobial active. The AEGIS Microbe Shield technology permanently bonds (polymerizes) with the substrate and will not leach or diminish overtime. The technology relies on the coating remaining affixed to the substrate – killing microorganisms as they contact the treated surface.

The AEGIS Microbe Shield is a permanent antimicrobial that becomes part of a new surface – a surface that is highly resistant to microbial attack. Unlike all other conventional antimicrobials, AEGIS does not off gas, leach, diffuse, migrate, volatilize, or otherwise leave the surface to which it has been applied. The result is an extraordinary safety and efficacy profile unmatched by other products. The incorporation of AEGIS antimicrobial, and its remarkable surface modifying characteristics, has produced a new generation of air filtration products that can provide effective control of airborne microbes while eliminating the filter surface as a potential site for bacteria growth.

Q: How does the Aegis antimicrobial technology work?

A: The AEGIS Microbe Shield is a reactive silane quaternary ammonium compound. When applied as a liquid to a host material, the active ingredient in the AEGIS antimicrobial forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer coating which chemically bonds, virtually irremovable, to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism come in contact with the treated surface, the sword punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobial coating doesn’t lose strength, the sword is ready for the next cell to contact and destroy it.

Q: What are the differences between the AEGIS Microbe shield technology and other antimicrobials on the market?

A: Conventional antimicrobial products penetrate livings cells and kill by way of poisoning the organism. This poisoning technology is applied to a host media/material where it slowly leaches out creating a “killing field or zone” around the surface into which targeted microorganisms pass. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly in order to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients. The AEGIS antimicrobial takes a totally unique approach. It provides an effective initial microbial kill when applied, like the conventional methods, but it also provides long-term control of growth on treated fibers for the life of that surface. The fiber itself is modified to make it antimicrobially active.

Q: How long does the antimicrobial treatment last?

A: Since the cured antimicrobial is non-volatile, insoluble and non-leaching, the treatment should last for the life of the treated fabric. Effective levels of the technology do not diminish overtime even after repeated rinsing. (Abrasive or caustic (pH>10.5) solutions will shorten the effective life of the AEGIS Microbe Shield)

Q: Is the AEGIS Microbe Shield toxic?

A: No. It does not volatilize, dissipate, or leach onto other surfaces or into the environment. The AEGIS Microbe shield is non-biodegradable. Its chemistry polymerizes where it is applied and forms a permanent bond that lasts for the life of the treated fabric/ thread.

Q: Is Microban registered for use against antimicrobial products to use against Covid-19?

A: The EPA issued guidance outlining EPA’s registered antimicrobial products for use against Covid-19. Microban EPA registration # 4091-21-3573 is included on the EPA list of acceptable products. The active ingredients include silane quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”) and citric acid.

Q: What is Microban antimicrobial product protection?

A: Microban antimicrobial product protection is a built-in active ingredient that enables products to resist the growth of microbes such as bacteria, mold and mildew. Microban protection helps products stay cleaner, fresher, and last longer than products that are untreated.

Q: How do products with Microban antimicrobial protection work?

Microban antimicrobial product protection disrupts the metabolism of contaminating microbes by preventing conversion of nutrients into energy. This inhibits microbial survival, reproduction and colonization. Microban protection remains inert until it encounters an environment where microbes can proliferate. Only then will it release tiny quantities of antimicrobial technology to disrupt vital cell functions of the microbe.

Microbe Shield®
The active ingredient in AEGIS® forms a protective coating that can molecularly bond with products upon application. Bacteria are attracted to the coating’s positive charge, and upon coming into contact with the treated surface, they quickly die. When applied to surfaces, AEGIS forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer that attracts, then electrocutes and ruptures, a microbe’s negatively charged cell membrane. AEGIS® inhibits the growth of microbes on surfaces by utilizing a charge disruption mode of action. AEGIS® is a cationic antimicrobial that’s attracted to the microbe’s cell wall and neutralizes the cell wall’s natural protection by interacting with cellular proteins needed to maintain cell wall integrity. Its charge-disruption mode of action leads to the eventual breakdown of the microbial cell (also known as lysis), eliminating odor, stains and deterioration.

Many other chemical disinfectants that control microbes require constant re-application or have unwanted side effects, including damage or discoloration on product surfaces, toxicity to living organisms or environmental damage. AEGIS® technology has a history of safe use and durable, ensuring long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy.

Q: What benefit do I get from products with Microban antimicrobial protection?

A: Microban protection continuously fights the growth of microbes such as odor and stain causing bacteria, mold and mildew. Microban® protection makes products easier to clean, helps them last longer, and keeps them fresher in between cleanings.

Q: Does a Microban-protected product need to be cleaned as often or as carefully as an untreated product?

A: Yes. Microban protection should never be a substitute for normal cleaning practices. Microban protection provides a continuous defense against the growth of microbes and protects the products, making them easier to clean and keeping them fresher between cleanings. However, Microban® technology is not a disinfectant and should not replace regular and thorough cleaning.

Q: Does Microban protection begin working immediately?

A: Microban protection begins to work as soon as a microorganism comes into contact with a treated product’s surface. The technology will remain active 24/7 and for the expected lifetime of the product.

Q: How do I know that Microban antimicrobial protection is safe?

A: Microban technologies have undergone extensive independent laboratory testing and have a long history of safe use. They are registered with the US EPA and notified with the EU BPR for all applications in which they are used. The active ingredients used by Microban are widely incorporated into a number of consumer, building, commercial, and textile applications. Microban solutions are incorporated into more than 1,000 products worldwide, and is trusted by more than 250 global brands and manufacturers. By way of example, Proctor & Gamble recently introduced Microban24 in February 2020 to major retail outlets across the USA.

Q: How long does Microban AEGIS antimicrobial protection work?

A: Microban AEGIS protection is engineered to provide antimicrobial protection for the useful lifetime of a treated product. The technology is built-in during the manufacturing process and will not wash off or wear away.

Q: Can the Microban AEGIS coated antimicrobial fabric extend product life?

A: Yes. Antimicrobial fabrics using our technology reduce odors by >90% after more than 50 typical home launderings. Because our odor control technology eliminates one of the major complaints about synthetic fabrics, it extends the useful life of clothing, increasing its value.

We work with partners to define durability requirements as part of the product development process. We then evaluate durability with industry standards or with customized methods. For example, for textiles and clothing that is washed, standard published methods such as AATCC 61-2A or AATCC 135 are used (61-2A is hand-washing versus 135 that is industrial washing, highly abrasive to any fabric finish).
